  4. Automated toll systems promise to save time and money while
  5. reducing congestion and accidents

  8.     What's that? Cars zipping past tollbooths on the New York
  9. State Thruway without stopping? Ordinarily such apparent
  10. lawlessness would be followed by flashing red lights in the
  11. rearview mirror. Not this time. New York is the latest state to
  12. test an electronic toll-collection system that lets motorists pay
  13. up without having to stop and fumble for cash or tokens. If
  14. adopted, the automated system promises to save time for
  15. motorists, improve safety at toll plazas, cut pollution and
  16. possibly reduce tolls. Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas currently
  17. use automated toll collection. New York is jointly testing two
  18. technologies -- one developed by Amtech, another by AT&T and
  19. Mark IV Industries -- in conjunction with New Jersey and
  20. Pennsylvania.

  22.      In both cases, passing cars, the time of day and toll
  23. amount are identified electronically and registered in a central
  24. computer that automatically charges a prepaid account. The
  25. systems can process up to 1,250 vehicles an hour, compared to
  26. 350 an hour for conventional tollbooths. And the machines can
  27. handle a car traveling as fast as 100 m.p.h. -- though that is
  28. likely to draw some flashing lights.
